Datong – Le temple Shanhua
Shanhua Temple
Après déjeuner, nous visitons un temple. Au programme était prévu le temple Huayan mais celui-ci est fermé pour travaux. Du coup notre guide locale, Caroline, nous propose à la place la visite du temple Shanhua.
Le temple Shanhua (ou temple du sud) date du début du VIII° siècle durant la dynastie Tang, il a été reconstruit sous les Jin et grandi sous le Ming. Les bâtiments qui sont encore debout aujourd'hui remontent au XI° siècle. Ici aussi il n'a pas été possible de prendre des photos dans toutes les salles, notamment dans la salle de Mahavira où se trouvent notamment cinq bouddhas dorés de très grande taille.
After lunch, we visited a temple. Huayan temple was scheduled on our program but it was closed for renovation, so our local guide, Caroline, proposed instead we visit the Shanhua temple.
Shanhua temple (or South temple) dates from the early eighth century during the Tang Dynasty, it was rebuilt under the Jin and extended under the Ming. The buildings that are still standing today date back to the eleventh century. Again it was not possible to take pictures everywhere, including in the Mahavira room where are five very large golden Buddhas.
Devant le temple, se trouve le mur aux neuf dragons dont la construction remonte à la fin du XIV° siècle, durant la fin du règne de Zhu Yuanzhang, fondateur de la dynastie Ming. Il mesure 45m de long par 8m de haut et un peu plus de 2m d'épaisseur.
In front of the temple is the Nine Dragon Wall which was built in the late fourteenth century, during the reign of Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty. It measures 45m long by 8m high and just over 2m thick.

A côté du temple et du mur aux 9 dragons, un chantier avec plein de grues. Caroline nous explique que ce sont les remparts que l'on reconstruit ! Ils ont été détruits tout comme les anciennes maisons il y a quelques années mais le tourisme aidant, on s'est rendu compte que l'on avait peut-être eu tort, d'où d'importants travaux entrepris pour reconstruire les remparts à l'identique !
Near the temple and the nine dragon wall was a site with lots of cranes. Caroline explained that these were the ramparts being rebuilt! They had been destroyed as the old houses a few years before but tourism helping, they realized that they had perhaps been wrong, which explained this significant work undertaken to rebuild the ramparts identically!
Du reste, nous qui voulions visiter la vieille ville, nous n'avons pas été déçus ! Une promenade dans le vieux Taiyuan était prévue au programme la veille mais il n'y a plus de vieux Taiyuan, les anciennes maisons ayant été détruites. A Datong, où la balade était aussi au programme, c'est à peu près le même problème, il ne reste pas grand-chose d'authentique et c'est bien dommage ! Nous avons quand même eu notre heure de liberté mais la moitié du temps imparti aurait largement suffit !
A walk through the old Taiyuan was planned on our program the previous day but there was not an old Taiyua anymore, old houses had been destroyed. In Datong, where the walk in the old district was also on our program, it was almost the same problem, there was not much authentic and that was a shame! We still had our hour of freedom but half that time would have been enough!
